Environmental activists have asked civil servants living in the Appeals Court Region 5 housing units allegedly built in a protected forest in Chiang Mai to leave, as the case has yet to be resolved.
Teerasak Roobsuwan, the coordinator of a Doi Suthep reforestation network, led a group of activists to the office of Appeals Court Region 5 on Monday to urge the court to follow through on the agreement both parties made on May 6th.
Under the agreement, the court must not renew a construction contract with the housing developer while court officials, who live in these housing units, must leave the premises by June 18th. The activists claimed the construction encroached on the protected forest areas of Doi Suthep.
Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana had previously said these housing units must be occupied under civil servant related regulations after they were completed. He added the Chiang Mai Governor will speak to those involved to settle the matter.
