Bangkok has joined forces with five of its neighboring provinces in preparing to handle flood waters and other crises during the rainy season with the capital’s governor expecting only a mid-risk this year.
Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Chaiyaphol Thitisak joined Bangkok Governor Pol Gen Assawin Kwanmuang and representatives of Nakhon Pathom, Chachoengsao, Pathumthani, Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi in a meeting to discuss water management during the rainy season of 2018.
They reviewed plans for at-risk areas along their provincial borders, identifying four main locations; Paholyothin road in front of Zeer department store to Lamlukka intersection, Chaengwattana road along Khlong Prapa to the Government Center, Ngam Wong Wan road from Soi Chinket 2 to Khlong Prapa and Sukhumvit road in the area of Bearing BTS station.
Bangkok's preparations, range from cleaning its drainage system and removing water weeds and aquiring up to 2.79 million sandbags. The city has readied its 700 man BEST unit and also opened a flood management center, which will operate 24 hours a day during the season.
Pol Gen Assawin said however, he anticipates flooding this year will be less severe than last year, especially with the improved coordination between the capital and its neighbors. He assured residents that flood problems will not be the responsibility of any one group or area and the impact on the public will be minimal.
