The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is cleaning the sewage system of Mu Ban Phatthana, after the 70-rai community suffered from flooding due to sewage pipe blockages.
Authorities from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage removed garbage from the village’s canals that obstructed drainage, resulting in frequent flooding. Rainwater is meant to flow from the village canals and collect at the main drainage pipe behind the village, before flowing into Hua Lamphong Canal. The cleanup operation had been underway for two weeks, and authorities have so far disposed of 280 metric tons of garbage. It is expected to take another 45 days to completely clear the sewage systems of an estimated 900 metric tons of garbage.
The department plans on installing a total of three water pumps and will cooperate with the Port Authority of Thailand to deploy them at optimal locations. It has also tasked the community leader with urging local residents not to dispose of waste in the canals, due to both drainage and health concerns.
