Cabinet OKs child subsidy budget, consumer protection bill

The Cabinet has agreed to allocate funds to the childcare subsidy program while giving a green light to the National Consumer Protection Organizations Council Bill.

Government Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkumnerd announced today that the Cabinet has approved in principle, the draft National Consumer Protection Organizations' Council Act, believing it will be an effective tool in decentralizing the power to protect consumers and enhancing coordination on the matter between the public and private sectors.

Under the bill, the country will be divided into ten zones, with each to be made up of various local networks of consumers. One person will be selected from each of the ten zones to sit as a board member of the National Consumer Protection Organizations' Council, alongside nine other members who will be specialists in related fields. The board will, on behalf of the Thai people, work with related public and private agencies to address any issues that may affect consumers in the country.

During the meeting, the Cabinet also resolved to set aside 1.43 billion baht from the central emergency reserve fund to support the extension of the childcare subsidy scheme. Previously, the government initiated the scheme to assist insured parents who have children from newborns to one year olds with a monthly subsidy of 400 baht each. The extended scheme raises the age of children eligible for the financial aid to three years old while the rate of payment is pushed up to 600 baht per child.
