Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has detained a member of its own office who posted false information about a fourth temple corruption case raid online.
The DSI has handed Pisitchai Sawangwattanakorn, an officer in the DSI’s Tax Litigation Office, to Crime Suppression Division investigators for questioning after he used his personal Facebook account to announce a police raid on a famous temple in Bangkok in relation to the temple fund corruption case.
After questioning Pisitchai for over three hours, Deputy Director-General of the DSI, Pol Lt Col Korawach Panprapakorn, revealed that the officer will be charged with violation of the Computer Crimes Act and that, while admitting to the post, he has asked for time to assemble documents for a statement in which he will prove it was only an expression of his personal opinion.
Meanwhile, Crime Suppression Division Commander, Pol Maj Gen Maitree Chimcherd, says, while there is no current plan for a fourth raid, Pisitchai’s post will not impact police efforts. He added that Pisitchai’s relationship to police handling the case cannot be disclosed and any further information on the temple fund case should be sought from the National Office of Buddhism.
