The extremely low tide in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan province exposing coral reefs this week is a normal natural phenomenon that occurs during the monsoon season and has nothing to do with tsunami waves.
The tide in several areas of Bang Sapan Noi district in Prachaup Khiri Khan dropped to the lowest in 20 years. Many coral reefs, giant clams and sea urchins were exposed for about two kilometres long.
The phenomenon was attributed to the low tide of the month, between June 16th and 17th from noon to 4 p.m., compounded with strong winds from the Andaman Sea which blew toward the Gulf of Thailand, pushing water away from the shoreline, resulting in extremely low tide.
However, the sea level has currently returned to normal with all the coral reefs submerged and not visible.
