False claims mislead donors to fake political fund

As in recent news about celebrities, false claims have occurred in the political domain as well. In this instance, the name of Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has been misused to deceive people into transferring money.

The matter was reported at the Bang Sue Police Station today. The former prime minister did not go there himself. Instead, he sent Mr Somporn Musika an attorney, and Mr Sukhum Wongprasit as secretary to report the misuse of his name to deceive members of the population.

Certain perpetrators recently claimed to be an officer of “Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh’s Foundation for Peace and Development” or his close personal associates. The claims could deceive a lot of people into transferring financial donations because the general has long been famous in political circles.

According to the attorney, the damage from the fraud is over 100 million baht because it involves various businesses. The occurrence has defamed the general and the foundation as well as causing great monetary loss to the victims who transferred their funds.

The attorney also said that the gang of deceivers is known to have been committing this kind of crime in both Thailand and other countries. They have been reprimanded before but have not stopped the behaviour, so he reported the crime to the police.

Moreover, if the same kind of deceptive behavior reoccurs, legal proceedings will be pursued to the full extent. The attorney also made a point of warning the public not to fall into such trap.
