The Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, has recognized the impact of electronic waste (e-waste) smuggling, and has instructed relevant agencies to conduct inspections on a regular basis.
Gen. Prayut said on Tuesday (June 5th) that the Ministry of Industry's inspection has uncovered unauthorized imports of e-waste.
The government has permitted seven plants in Thailand to bring in scrap electronics, but five of them have been found to pass on the waste to smaller unauthorized facilities. These five plants have had their operations suspended, and are facing legal action.
The Prime Minister said authorities have nearly completed inspections of 26 plastic waste sorting plants, with only nine left to be examined. Some have been found to have been operating illegally, and they will be prosecuted according to the law.
