Many sectors in society have collaborated to celebrate World Environment Day with a campaign for less use of plastic bags as an important aspect this year.
The Ministry of Public Health launched a campaign called “We Change World Change” to encourage the ministry’s staff to use fewer plastic bags and set a good example for the public. The ministry also encouraged hospitals to join in its “GREEN & CLEAN Hospital” project which promotes energy-saving and environmental protection.
The Department of Medical Services has instructed 30 hospitals and institutions under its supervision to stop using plastic bags to carry medicines, and use cloth bags instead. 18 of the institutions and hospitals have already stopped uing plastic bags and 12 others are following suit. All of them will stop using plastic bags from 1 October onwards.
The department is urging patients to bring cloth bags to hold their medicines.
