The Ministry of Commerce continues to sell rice bought and stored by the previous administration under the problematic rice pledging scheme.
Rice auctions on Friday saw 11 winners among 13 qualified bidders who bought a total of 530,000 tons of rice worth 1.8 billion baht. The average bidding price per ton was 3,220 baht. Because of the poor quality, the rice sold on Friday was for non-food uses and the feed meal industries including the energy sector.
Adul Chotinisakorn, director general of the Foreign Trade Department, said the Ministry of Commerce was able to clear the remaining 44,000 tons of consumer-grade rice in May and also sold a total of 1.49 million tons of rice to non-food industries, with only 10,000 tons remaining.
Before the current government took office, there was a total of 18.7 million tons of rice which were acquired during the last administration. The Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led government has so far been able to auction off 16.89 million tons.
