The national reform steering commission approved a ban on import of electronic waste for which an ad hoc committee was set up.
Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda said the commission, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister/Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, discussed the issue of improper imports of electronic and plastic waste.
He said the panel agreed that import of electronic waste should be halted as so much of it would violate the regulations, and agreed with the banning of all imports of electronic waste in the future.
A committee will be established to address this issue, covering the procedures of import permit issuance, shipments and factory establishment permits. The committee will also look into what practices could be more of a burden to the country, and prohibit such activities.
"The committee will be responsible for allowing or prohibiting the import of each item, while items already imported must be investigated to find the responsible persons and to see if the practice is legal."
He added that local administrations must cooperate more with related agencies to address the issue in their responsible areas better, stressing that it is not too late to solve this problem.
