Govt seeks to push Thai SMEs into e-commerce through thaitrade.com

The Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs has announced the government’s goal of encouraging Thai SMEs to use the website thaitrade.com as their main portal to the e-commerce market.

During his address at the “E-Commerce Big Bang” event, organized by the Ministry of Commerce, Deputy Prime Minister Somkit Jatusripitak pointed out that the growth of technology and e-commerce worldwide has presented opportunities to business operators, especially SMEs. Therefore, he said the Commerce Ministry has been assigned to cooperate with local public and private agencies to foster more community entrepreneurs, raise the quality of local products and promote online trade via thaitrade.com.

The deputy premier said the website has been upgraded to serve as a platform for business-to-business-to-customer or B2B2C trade, offering an e-payment option, logistics services as well as a money-back guarantee. He stressed that it is crucial for thaitrade.com to be developed into a national e-marketplace platform as information on trade activities through the website will be compiled into big data that is useful for the government in formulating its economic policy.

According to Mr Somkid, over the past four years, the government has injected over 600 billion baht into various projects to develop the grassroots economy, about 400 billion of which went to projects targeting SMEs. For fiscal year 2019, another 400 billion baht has been earmarked for SME support by the government.

Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong, who also spoke at the event, expressed his confidence that, once thaitrade.com has been established as the national e-marketplace platform, it will help boost online sales of Thai traders from the current 5 billion baht to 10 billion or more by 2019. He also expects that the number of online traders will increase to 100,000 from only about 25,000 at present.
