To encourage energy conservation, three organizations responsible for electricity services are cooperating to ensure conservation efforts by power producers and distributors.
The Ministry of Energy, through the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Electricity Authority and Provincial Electricity Authority, has introduced measures enforcing a standard of energy conservation among energy producers and distributors, which is called the Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS).
This measure is part of the Energy Efficiency Plan, 2015-2036, which requires the three electricity authorities to conduct a pilot project over five years to study the results of electricity consumption reduction before applying the standard as a guide in the future.
Consultation will be offered in regard to the adaptation of devices to reduce energy consumption in buildings, establishments, factories and people’s houses. For financial motivation, financial support will be given to agencies and organizations in need of adjustments in energy consumption efficiency.
There are also other measures for the overall support of energy saving. For instance, a standard for the electricity saving Label No. 5 will be created. It is expected that 206 million units of electricity will be saved during the initial five-year period.
The EERS measure is new in Thailand, but in other countries, including the US and in Europe, it has already been enforced and has resulted in a concrete reduction of electric energy consumption.
