More than 200 sugarcane growers in Kanchanaburi province have converged on City Hall to submit a petition calling for the government to address the sugarcane oversupply.
The farmers, led by chairperson of Cane Planters Association for Zone 7 Kamthorn Kittichotesap, complained that the government's policy to turn rice farmers into sugarcane growers has led to a surge in sugarcane yields that has depressed prices.
They demanded that the government increase the maximum allowed truckload of sugarcane by raising the trailer height from 3.4 to 4 meters to facilitate the disposal of yield surpluses. The farmers also called for sugar factories to stay in operation during long holidays and at nighttime, as well as for the government to allow more foreign workers into the country to ease labor shortages.
The sugarcane farmers also voiced their support for draft amendments to the sugarcane and sugar bill to address price slumps in the production years of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. Deputy Governor Bavornsak Vanich received the appeal on behalf of the government and pledged to call an urgent meeting to address their problems. Similar motions were reported in other provinces.
