Thailand will use the case of a pilot whale that died of consuming eight kilograms of plastic waste in Songkhla province as a lesson to learn on the occasion of World Ocean Day.
The Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Jatuporn Buruspat, said his department will organize an event to mark World Ocean Day, which falls on June 8th every year, to raise awareness on challenges faced by the international community in connection with the sea. The event will be held at Siam Phawalai Royal Grand Theater in Siam Paragon, Bangkok.
Mr. Jatuporn said the department would like to invite all sectors to contribute by reducing the use of plastic materials.
He said authorities have launched campaigns to encourage people to use fewer plastic bags and turn to reusable bags.
