A huge number of pirated products confiscated from different areas on the island province of Phuket have been destroyed by Phuket Customs House.
More than 3,000 items of pirated goods and smuggled brand-name garments, shoes and accessories worth over 1.8 million baht were cut into pieces and crushed by a backhoe then reduced to ashes in a new incinerator of Phuket City Municipality. Members of the media were at the venue to witness the destruction of the illegal items.
Pathong and Karon beaches in the districts of Muang Phuket and Kathu are among the hotspots for pirated products in the province. Despite continued raids by military and police officers, the illicit business keeps resurfacing around tourist spots in Phuket.
The activity today was to re-assert the government and Phuket's stance against piracy and to send a new round of warnings to those involved in the illegal trade.
