Nakhon Ratchasima governor inspects school lunches

The governor of Thailand's Nakhon Ratchasima province has carried out two surprise inspections of school lunches and ordered checks on over 1,400 schools following the discovery of corruption impacting the provision of lunches to students.

Nakhon Ratchasima Governor, Vichien Chantarotai, personally led surprise inspections of school lunches at Muang Nakhon Ratchasima School and Nakhon Ratchasima Pre-School, looking into the quality of the meals. The checks follow complaints of non-nutritional lunches being served to students and possible graft in the purchasing of food.

The governor found both school cafeterias to be clearly displaying signs for parents indicating the nutritional value of menu items. After, he charged his deputy, Murtathi Rakchartcharoen, with overseeing inspections of 1,400 schools by the province’s 32 district chiefs.

Meanwhile, two investigations stemming from the discovery of irregularities in school lunches at Tapan Hin Wittayakarn Municipal School in Phichit province are nearing completion, with one to conclude this month and the other in July. It has, so far, been found that, while budget for the purchase of ingredients was expended, the items were not completely acquired. The discovery has led to the school’s Deputy Director Tachatham Sritha, who oversaw the purchases, being removed from his post.
