The President of the National Legislative Assembly has confirmed that the draft law on the election of the Members of Parliament has already been submitted to the Prime Minister.
NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said on Tuesday that the draft organic law on MP elections is now in the hands of PM Prayut Chan-o-cha, who will proceed to present it for royal endorsement before it can come into force.
Regarding progress of the drafting of all local and provincial laws, Mr. Pornpetch said that they are now being reviewed by the Council of State and this process means the government is unable to send them to the NLA for deliberation yet.
The NLA President conceded that it is now impossible to project the timing of provincial and local elections and determine they will take place before or after the general election, although the government earlier announced a plan to organize the former first.
He added that the NLA is determined to complete the deliberation of all laws before the general election takes place in order to avoid any delay during the time when the new government prepares to take office.
