The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) is urgently expediting water management projects in low lying areas of the Chao Phraya river course.
Secretary-General of the ONWR, Somkiat Prajamwong made the announcement during his tour of water retention areas in Phak Hai district of Ayutthaya province. The visit is part of his tour of inspection to follow up on the initiative to strategically use 12 low lying zones of the Chao Phraya River to store water during the rainy season.
The ONWR Secretary-General indicated that the officials are working around the clock to urgently unclog canals, repair water management related buildings, allocate machinery to assist in flood relief and prepare to deal with inundations. Secretary-General Somkiat commented that it is important to inform residents in flood prone areas to be aware of their situation.
The lower part of the Chao Phraya River is a crucial economic zone and an important manufacturing base of the Kingdom. The Government last year urged farmers to move forward their schedule for planting and cultivating rice in order to facilitate water retention without losing productivity.
According to Mr. Somkiat, the initiative was satisfactory with only limited areas experiencing floods. He said adjustments will be made to the plan this year to improve water flow during the rainy season.
