Pedestrians are reportedly pleased after Chatuchak district officials relocated vendors who were operating illegally on the footpaths in front of Central Ladprao and The One Park shopping malls, returning the public space to members of the community.
Residents praised the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) for enforcing the regulations, saying that they now feel free to use the footpaths, because there are fewer vendors offering goods in the area.
A number of the vendors are still looking for a new venue to pursue their business. A few others, particularly those in front of The One Park, are remaining in an authorized vending area. The latter group told the media that the regulations greatly facilitate traffic and offer more security to pedestrians. However, they admitted that their income has taken a hit due to the reduced number of customers.
Chatuchak authorities meanwhile, put up fences along Phahonyothin Road, and Municipality officials erected a couple of centers to oversee vendors to prevent merchants from setting up stalls in unauthorized zones around the clock.
Section 19 of the 1992 Act on the Maintenance of the Cleanliness and Orderliness of the Country states that no one shall place, put or pile any object on the road except in an area specified by local officials or other competent authority making an announcement with the approval of traffic officials. Violators are subject to a fine of as much as 10,000 baht.
