H.E. Mrs. Eva Hager, the ambassador of Austria to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on occasion of her assumption of the post, said Deputy Government Spokesperson Lt. Gen. Werachon Sukondhapatipak.
The premier welcomed the Austrian ambassador and expressed confidence that the woman diplomat would help enhance relations and cooperation between the two countries. Both parties were pleased that this year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and in 2019, Thailand and Austria will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation Treaty which was signed in 1869.
Both parties also congratulated tangible outcomes of educational cooperation through establishment of Sattahip Technical College and Thailand’s first-ever railway engineering curriculum, as well as other technical assistances. The premier said that Thailand is keen to expand cooperation with Austria in vocational education.
As for economic cooperation, the premier explained about Thailand 4.0 policy which emphasizes sciences, technology, and innovation as economic driving forces. He also mentioned the development of special economic zones, and Eastern Economic Corridor, where Austrian investors could consider making investments in the fields of expertise, such as railway engineering, medicals, and advanced technology. The Austrian envoy expressed pleasure that a number of Austrian leading companies have made investment in Thailand, and that the Thai private sector is also interested in investing in Austria. She stands ready to help promote trade and investment expansion between Thailand and Austria.
Both parties were also pleased with tourism relations with regular exchange of tourists. Last year, there were over 100,000 Austrian tourists visiting Thailand. The Austrian ambassador was pleased that Thai aviation has resumed its direct flights to Vienna which will contribute to the increase of tourists between the two countries. The Prime Minister commended Austria’s success in tourism and expressed hope that both countries could further cooperate in those areas. The Austrian envoy agreed to endorse exchange of knowledge and experiences on tourism between Thailand and Austria.
