The Prime Minister has confirmed his government has not been idle on the issue of illegal electronic and plastic waste imports and that he had ordered regular inspections.
Speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha said that inspections by the Ministry of Industry have uncovered unauthorized imports of electronic waste. The ministry found that of seven facilities allowed to take in electronic waste, which can be scrapped for the valuable metals it contains, up to five were engaged in illicit activities such as passing on the waste to smaller unauthorized facilities. All five have had their operations suspended and are facing legal repercussions.
The PM continued by saying a check of 26 plastic waste facilities is nearing completion with only nine left to inspect. Some have been found to have been acting illegally and will be dealt with.
Meanwhile, Law Enforcement Investigation Office 7 Director, Sanguan Natwathattaphol forwarded a letter to the premier drawing his attention to Ta Yang district of Petchburi. He explained that while the area has a large deposit of garbage, efforts to establish a waste energy facility have been blocked. Sanguan said the stoppage has slowed the eradication of the waste and that he fears conflicts over the facility could escalate.
Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Prime Minister’s Office Sompas Nilphan received Sanguan’s letter and promised to look into the issue.
