The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has accepted in principle three drug related bills and proposed the invocation of Article 44 of the interim charter to legalize the use of marijuana in healthcare.
Addressing the assembly before the vote, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong said the three laws will help the country prevent drug abuse among Thai youth more effectively and allow the use of drugs for medical purposes, while enabling both the public and private sectors to take part in the drafting of anti-drug related policies and drug rehabilitation programs.
After hours of deliberation, the lawmakers passed all three bills by unanimous consent and appointed a 28-member committee to study and vet the bills within a 90-day timeframe.
Some of the legislators went on to suggest that a special law such as Article 44 of the interim constitution be enforced, to legalize medical marijuana.
