Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak expects Thailand to have a 5G mobile network in operation by 2020.
He presided over the MoU signing ceremony between Huawei, the National Innovation Agency, and the National Science and Technology Development Agency at Siam Kempinski hotel, Bangkok, where he stressed the government’s commitment on digital infrastructure development.
He said the government is working to ensure the village broadband campaign will serve some 70,000 villages within this year, and provide connection with schools and healthcare facilities, while Thailand also gives priority on the submarine cable investment and the negotiation with Hong Kong to make Thailand the digital hub of the region.
The deputy premier said Thai agencies and mobile network carriers are now aimed to push forward the introduction of 5G services in Thailand over the next 2 years, as the 5G service will create big impact to the manufacturing and service sector.
He said the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will be announcing standards for 5G services by early-2019, which is something Thailand is prepared to comply as fast advancements of digital technology can help raise the national GDP, and solve poverty in rural areas.
He said Big Data Thailand will be held later this year announcing the country’s preparedness for full digital transformation.
