21 gun salute by armed forces marks birthday anniversary of HM Queen Sirikit

All three elements of the Thai armed forces yesterday performed 21 gun salutes marking the birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of the Ninth Reign.

At noon on August 12th, the Royal Thai Army, Royal Thai Navy and Royal Thai Air Force each performed a 21 gun salute. The navy performed its salute at its Bangkok headquarters at Wichaiprasit Fort in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok.

The air force performed its salute at the Navaminda Kasatriyadhiraj Royal Air Force Academy in Sai Mai district of Bangkok, and the army’s 1st Field Artillery Battalion King’s Guard performed the salute at Sanam Luang.

A “salute” is a military tradition observed worldwide and is used to honor a flag or individual. The number of shots involved in the salute is determined by the level of honor to be expressed.

Thailand performed its first gun salute during the reign of King Narai the Great. Modern salutes are performed with no fewer than four guns with barrels measuring no less than 120 millimeters and are not allowed during the time between sunset and sunrise. Salutes for members of the royal family can either be 21 gun or 101 gun for special occasions while members of the civil service or international events can also be honored by a salute.
