The Ministry of Commerce has moved to improve access to daily necessities for flood victims in the northeastern region, as well as the provinces of Kanchanaburi and Phetchaburi.
Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, Boonyarit Kalayanamit said today the Ministry of Commerce has instructed his department and provincial offices to ensure that flood-hit areas do not experience shortages of basic necessities that could lead to opportunistic price hikes or hoarding practices. Those found guilty of these practices are subject to a maximum prison term of seven years, a maximum fine of 140,000 baht, or both. So far, no complaints have been filed.
To prevent shortages, Boonyarit said the department has held discussions with major retailers to act as regional distributors and increase the stock of items that may be in high demand, such as rice, vegetable oil, instant noodles, drinking water, sugar, eggs, sanitary napkins, and diapers. He confirmed that his department will work to ensure fair pricing during this time and will dispatch mobile units under the Pracharat Blue Flag program to offer products at discount prices.
