Eleven boys recently rescued from a flooded cave in Chiang Rai province, have now returned home after spending time in a Buddhist monastery as novice monks.
The boys, along with their 25-year-old football coach, became ordained on July 25th to bless the spirit of Saman Kunan, a former Thai navy Seal, who died during the rescue.
The ceremony on leaving the novice monkhood was chaired by Phra Phutthiwong Wiwat, abbot of Wat Phra That Doi Tung, and was attended by the boy’s relatives and members of the public numbering more than 300 people.
The coach will stay on as Buddhist monk for at least three months. One of the rescued boys did not participate in the ordination because he is a Christian.
In the meantime, an exhibition about the rescue of the 12 boys and their coach along with traditional performances is being held at Wat Pha That Doi Wao from now until August 16th.
