Resorts along waterways in Nakhon Nayok province have been asked to suspend operations for two to three days while the water situation is assessed after a surge from Khao Yai National Park caused Nang Rong and Wang Ta Krai waterfalls to swell.
Natural waterways throughout Nakhon Nayok have risen considerably and the flow has gained speed due to a surge from Khao Yai National Park. Videos posted to Facebook have depicted flood waters flowing into areas such as Sida Resort and the authorities have already had to perform several rescues of people trapped by rapid waters.
One video said to be taken at Khlong Wang Ta Krai shows two men being swept away while holding onto a lifesaver. Their whereabouts have yet to be ascertained.
Governor Nattaphong Sirichana convened a meeting on the situation, which decided resorts should cease operations for two to three days while the situation is assessed.
Muang Nakhon Nayok District Chief Nattaphong Siriboon has disclosed that 20 tourists have been trapped by Khlong Madua as they are unable to cross the fast moving water. It has been confirmed they have enough food and water to last two days so rescue attempts will take place once the water level has dropped.
Residents of three sub-districts accounting for 21 villages along Nakhon Nayok River have been placed on alert and told to move their belongings to higher ground. Sarika Sub-District authorities have erected a sandbag barrier to defend the area against rising waters.
The Royal Irrigation Department has sought to aid the situation by closing its sluicegate at Khun Dan Prakarn Chon Dam. The reservoir is holding five percent more water than at the same time last year after an almost five hour bout of rain measuring 160 millimeters took place in Khao Yai. While levels in Nakhon Nayok have receded slightly, water is still flowing rapidly.
