The planned amendment of the Election Commission law has received support from various groups, who hope the change will ensure a smooth transition of work between the incumbent and new teams.
Secretary-General of the Election Commission Pol. Col. Jarungwit Phumma said on Tuesday that he has heard about the National Legislative Assembly’s plan to propose the amendment of a part of the Election Commission Act, which is about the selection of election inspectors, but has not seen all details.
Pol. Col. Jarungwit, said that without the amended law, the current team of commissioners will continue working in accordance with the existing law, which states that the selection process will be concluded and publicly announced in early September.
Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee Meechai Ruchuphan, said meanwhile that the power to select the election inspectors should belong to the new team of commissioners, who will work along side their predecessors.
Regarding the planned amendment of the EC law, Mr. Meechai said that the NLA should seek the opinion of the Office of the Election Commission because they are directly involved and possess experience related to the matter.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha says that the NLA’s planned amendment is intended to help find a perfect way to enable existing and new teams of ECs to work together in selecting a qualified inspector. He added that the National Council for Peace and Order won't intervene in the matter.
Lastly, Secretary-General of the Council of State Distat Hotrakitya said that five of the six provincial election laws have been reviewed while the amendment of the NCPO’s order about the primary vote system is at the preparation stage.
