PM calls for agricultural adjustments to fix low prices of farm products

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha advised the agricultural sector to make adjustments in order to sustainably solve the low prices of farm products.

Government Spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the premier adressed the issue of the low prices of farm goods, especially rice, are currently having better prices due to increased demands in the world markets following natural disasters.

He said that the excessive production of rice will result in oversupplying, which will bring down the pricing according to the supply demand cycle, while the key issues the agricultural sector is facing are high manufacturing costs and debt issues, both are long-lasting problems which the government has been trying to solve but will require cooperation from all sides.

He pointed out the weakness of the individual farming as the farmers will have to bear high manufacturing costs and will have worse negotiation power and marketing opportunities. He has recommended farmers to gather as cooperatives, community enterprises, or farm in common crops, in order to cut down costs, improve yield and quality, and create more negotiation power. Farmers are also advised to diversify their plantations to include more varieties of plants, and to also farm animals as another source of income.

He added the government always have to buy produces from farmers in prices higher than the market, while the failure to sell those produce will eventually affect the country's budget, thus all sides must come together to find ways to improve the quality of life of the farmers.
