Thailand's Prime Minister has voiced his pleasure after meeting with the people of Petchaburi province and witnessing their positive resolve with the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) pointing out that a fall in the level of Kaeng Krachan reservoir is a positive sign flooding will be averted.
Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha visited Petchaburi province to inspect the water situation, starting his tour at Petchaburi Dam in Ta Yang district of the province. He stated, to civil servants and officials receiving him at the dam, that his presence was to encourage their work and to commend them for effectively averting flooding. He commented on the cheery disposition he sensed among members of the public present at his reception before receiving a briefing on Kaeng Krachan Dam from RID Director-General Thongplew Kongchan.
The RID head reported that Kaeng Krachan reservoir is currently holding over 730 million cubic meters of water standing 46 centimeters above the dam's spillways while Petchaburi Dam is releasing water at a rate of 160 cubic meters per second, safeguarding nearby farms and residences with only a handful of resorts hit by flooding. Inundation is still expected to occur in downtown Petchaburi on August 12 with waters to reach 30-50 centimeters and remain for seven to 10 days. With the location of flooding predicted, authorities are now warning citizens and have installed over 40 water pumps to speed up drainage. RID Canal D9 has been dredged to increase drainage and should shave 35 million cubic meters of water from the flood total. Thongplew noted Kaeng Krachan reservoir water levels have been dropping, providing hope that a major crisis will be avoided.
Petchaburi Dam, built on Petchaburi River 27 kilometers away from Kaeng Krachan Dam, has a maximum release rate of 1,400 cubic meters per second. It is currently releasing at a rate of 123.87 cubic meters per second.
