The Office of the Prime Minister will seek cabinet endorsement of the planting of economic crops in forest communities and on privately-owned land.
Minister attached to the PM’s Office Kobsak Pootrakool says in the next few weeks, the cabinet will be asked to review a proposal to allow members of the public to grow economic crops such as teak, Siamese rosewood, iron wood and Siamese Sal in their communities, a move that will ultimately increase green areas in Thailand by as much as 12 million rai in the next two decades.
Once approved by the cabinet, the proposal will be tabled at the National Legislative Assembly.
The cabinet late last month greenlighted the Ministry of Commerce’s request to allow businesses to use economic crops within their property as collateral.
Kobsak said the planting of these perennial trees is part of development sustainability outlined in the country’s 20-year national strategic plan.
