Search for last two election commissioners underway

The search for the last two members to join the Office of the Election Commission of Thailand has begun.

The EC selection committee which was chaired by Supreme Court President Cheep Jullamon, held its first meeting on Wednesday and President of the National Legislative Assembly Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, who is one of the committee members, said that the meeting resolved to pursue the process to fill the two vacancies in the new seven-member commission.

According to Mr. Pornpetch, applications will be open from August 14 to 28 while a conclusion should be drawn in early October before the names of the final two candidates are presented to the NLA to review their ethics and behavioral background.

Meanwhile, incumbent Chair of the Election Commission Supachai Somcharoen said today that his team has not been hasty in trying to complete the selection of the election inspectors, as claimed by some NLA members.

He stated that as the NLA is the legislature, the EC will continue to respect the fact and comply with the law.

Meanwhile, Mr. Supachai said that the EC is publishing the names of all 616 candidates applying for the position of election inspector and will wait for the public to check and examine the list and file any objection.

He said that any candidates, who are found to belong to or to be affiliated with any political party, will be immediately disqualified.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam commented that the NLA can propose an amendment of the Election Commission Act if it sees fit, while noting that an amendment wouldn't delay the much-anticipated general election as they are two separate matters.

NLA’s vice president denies claims of legislative support for government

A vice president of the National Legislative Assembly has denied claims that the legislature has been trying to help members of the current government in the next election. Mr. Peerasak Porjit, the Second Vice President of the NLA, went with a number of members of the legislature on Monday to meet over 1,000 farmers, who represent growers from 67 provinces, to collect opinions for the drafting of the Rice Act. The NLA said that the new law is not intended to limit the rights of farmers and merchants but to ensure standard practices and a correct understanding among all. According to the draft law, rice buyers will have to register themselves and sellers will have to produce receipts while a system will be set up to collect information for a rice database. The NLA expects the new law to be ready for submission to the main assembly by August 20 before it goes through a normal process. When asked if the new law might appear to be an attempt to help garner support for the current...
