Search for last two election commissioners underway

The search for the last two members to join the Office of the Election Commission of Thailand has begun.

The EC selection committee which was chaired by Supreme Court President Cheep Jullamon, held its first meeting on Wednesday and President of the National Legislative Assembly Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, who is one of the committee members, said that the meeting resolved to pursue the process to fill the two vacancies in the new seven-member commission.

According to Mr. Pornpetch, applications will be open from August 14 to 28 while a conclusion should be drawn in early October before the names of the final two candidates are presented to the NLA to review their ethics and behavioral background.

Meanwhile, incumbent Chair of the Election Commission Supachai Somcharoen said today that his team has not been hasty in trying to complete the selection of the election inspectors, as claimed by some NLA members.

He stated that as the NLA is the legislature, the EC will continue to respect the fact and comply with the law.

Meanwhile, Mr. Supachai said that the EC is publishing the names of all 616 candidates applying for the position of election inspector and will wait for the public to check and examine the list and file any objection.

He said that any candidates, who are found to belong to or to be affiliated with any political party, will be immediately disqualified.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam commented that the NLA can propose an amendment of the Election Commission Act if it sees fit, while noting that an amendment wouldn't delay the much-anticipated general election as they are two separate matters.
