Despite flooding in many areas of Thailand, the water situation in the Chao Phraya River Basin remains under control while the discharge rate at Chao Phraya Dam is set to be increased this week.
Effective water management in the Nan and the Ping River Basins, which are located in the northern part of Thailand, has allowed water downstream in the Chao Phraya River Basin to stay within normal levels. Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province is currently releasing water at a rate of 300 cubic meters per second, which hasn't caused any flood problems in areas below the dam.
Nevertheless, the Royal Irrigation Department has revealed that it will adjust upwards the dam’s discharge rate to 500 cubic meters per second during this week. The department has informed the governors of all downstream provinces to be prepared for possible flooding stemming from the adjustment. Areas likely to be affected by an overflow of the Chao Phraya River have been mapped out so that relevant agencies can provide help for residents in a timely manner.
In the meantime, the director of Regional Irrigation Office 12 has confirmed the integrity of the Chao Phraya Dam, saying inspections have been carried out every two months and no sign of deterioration or damage has been found.
