Authorities are keeping a close watch on the water situation due to expectations that Tropical Storm Bebinca, which has formed in the South China Sea, will move into upper Vietnam on August 15-16 and bring rain to the northeast and north of Thailand.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is coordinating with up to 45 provinces expected to be affected by rain brought by Bebinca. Up to 17 provinces in the north, 18 in the northeast, four in the central region and six in the southern region have been told to be wary of stormy conditions. Another 13 provinces in the east and south have also received warnings of high waves at sea and strong winds.
The Temporary Crisis Center meanwhile has reported Kaeng Krachan Dam is holding 726 million cubic meters of water and that the level is falling. However, due to forecast of rain, caution is to still be exercised in Petchaburi province. Nam Oun Dam in Sakon Nakhon province currently holds about 534 million cubic meters of water and is not considered in danger of overflowing at this time. Vajiarlongkorn Dam in Kanchanaburi province contains 7.583 billion cubic meters of water but is now taking in less water from the north and should be able to adequately drain the excess.
The DDPM reports that 22 provinces affected by the influence of Tropical Storm Son Tinh between July 17 and August 13 have returned to normal with only nine still contending with inundation. Citizens in the provinces have been urged to call the DDPM 24 hour hotline 1784 for assistance when needed.
