The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has reported that flood counter measures, such as dredging canals and installing water pumps, are 70% complete.
BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Somphong Wiengkaew today chaired a meeting on the city’s preparations for the rainy season. The meeting heard that the BMA’s flood prevention plan has progressed by 70% and is expected to be finished by July this year.
A key measure in the plan is dredging canals, and clearing drainage pipes to enhance drainage capacity. Officials estimate that Bangkok has over 6,400 kilometers of canals, and the BMA has dredged 70% of them at a rate of three kilometers per year.
Authorities are also monitoring 53 flood-prone areas throughout the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. A total of 190 water pumps have been deployed in these areas, with another 100 pumps in reserve. The BMA is also preparing to deploy water thrusters along Prem Prachakorn Canal and Ladphrao Canal to increase the rate of drainage into the Chao Phraya River.
