The Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee is confident the general election will take place as planned in the roadmap.
CDC Chairman Meechai Ruchuphan said on Tuesday that the national poll will be organized in February 2019 as announced by Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha unless any unexpected circumstances emerge.
Mr. Meechai said that Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has just asked the CDC to send representatives to a discussion between the government and the Election Commission on June 13, although details of the meeting remain unknown.
Citing the Constitution’s suspension clauses, which state that an election must be held within 150 days of all four election laws coming into force, Mr. Meechai urged the EC to make use of the time during which all related laws are not in effect to prepare everything that needs to be done.
Meanwhile, Gen. Prayut said this week that the government is ready to do everything to lead to the lifting of the ban on political activities but noted that such a process must be taken step-by-step and be free from any pressure.
