Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) Chairman, Meechai Ruchuphan has called on the Election Commission of Thailand and political parties to make preparations for next year’s election.
Meechai said today that all sides especially the electoral body and political parties should start preparing for the election after the head of the national legislature sent the last organic act which governs the election of members of parliament to the prime minister.
The draft MPs law and the organic act to do with the origin of senators will be enforced 90 days after they have been announced in the Royal Gazette. During the 90-day interval, Meechai said the electoral organ should draft regulations and orders related to the election including the delimitation of constituencies, while political parties have to prepare their election campaigns, and arrange primary elections which will help narrow down the number of candidates.
The CDC chief reiterated that the election must be held within 150 days of election laws coming into force while election results must be announced within 60 days of the election, as stipulated in 2017 Constitution.
