Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan will chair the first meeting between the cabinet, the National Council for Peace and Order, and political parties late this month.
DPM Gen Prawit said representatives of the Election Commission of Thailand will also take part in the upcoming meeting which will be the first of its kind. There will be two rounds of discussions between the government and political parties prior to the general election planned for February next year.
The first meeting will discuss the possibility of unlocking certain political restrictions such as allowing parties to recruit more members.
He noted that election campaigns will be allowed once election related laws have come into effect.
Responding to the Future Forward Party’s comment about not attending the first meeting unless the discussions are livestreamed, Gen Prawit said livestreaming was not an option and that no parties are obligated to attend.
