The Ministry of Energy is developing a framework to establish Thailand's energy supply free of fossil fuel resources.
Energy Minister Siri Jirapongphan said the framework, which will be completed by the end of the year, will focus on developing alternative energy sources for electricity supply and vehicles.
Thailand will be independent of fossil fuels within 20 years under the framework. Among changes homeowners will be encouraged to install solar panels to lower electricity bills. They will also be introduced to a smart grid and a smart meter.
Like other ASEAN nations, Thailand is developing the framework in response to the government’s energy security policy. Siri added that with the ongoing basic infrastructure development and alternative energy market accessibility, Thailand is already off to a good start.
He said even though energy prices in Thailand may not be as low as other nations, the funds collected from energy taxes will be used to improve basic infrastructure and promote economic growth.
