Deputy Prime Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya has visited the eastern province of Rayong to observe a demonstration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used in the suppression of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU).
The demonstration took place at Squadron 106 at U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport. Admiral Pichet Tanaset, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Navy updated Gen Chatchai on the navy's crusade against illegal fishing.
Gen Chatchai said the use of UAVs was to expand the role of unmanned aircraft to include the navy's sea patrols, in addition to the air force's aerial surveys, to prevent foreign fishing boats from trawling in Thai waters.
When detecting irregularities, the UAVs will send the data to the Fisheries Monitoring Center (FMC), which cooperates with Port In - Port Out Control Center (PIPO) in IUU suppression.
The anti-IUU operations using unmanned vehicles are a collaborative activity by different agencies such as the Department of Fisheries, the navy, the air force, the Marine Department and marine police.
