Kalasin raids informal lenders

Kalasin provincial authorities have coordinated with the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) to eradicate the operations of the province’s informal lenders, making several arrests after carrying out raids in nine areas of six districts.

Kalasin Governor Kraisorn Kongchalad, Deputy Commander of the Kalasin Peace and Order Maintaining Command Col Sombut Chindasri and Director of the DSI’s Technology and Information Office Pol Lt Col Wichai Suwanprasert held a press conference after the raids.

They announced that action had been taken against informal lenders providing loans bearing illegal interest rates in the districts of Muang Kalasin, Komalasai, Kongchai, Namon, Sahaskan and Kam Muang. The operation was part of the “Kalasin Happiness Model: No Kalasin Resident Left Behind” program.

A total 15 individuals were taken into custody with 10 items of contraband seized, including 145,610 baht in cash, 16 bank books, two ATM cards, 19 mobile phones, four vehicles, two motorcycles and 500 business cards.

NLA’s vice president denies claims of legislative support for government

A vice president of the National Legislative Assembly has denied claims that the legislature has been trying to help members of the current government in the next election. Mr. Peerasak Porjit, the Second Vice President of the NLA, went with a number of members of the legislature on Monday to meet over 1,000 farmers, who represent growers from 67 provinces, to collect opinions for the drafting of the Rice Act. The NLA said that the new law is not intended to limit the rights of farmers and merchants but to ensure standard practices and a correct understanding among all. According to the draft law, rice buyers will have to register themselves and sellers will have to produce receipts while a system will be set up to collect information for a rice database. More Bueng Kan farmers producing durian

Rubber farmers in Beung Khong Long district, Beung Kan province, have been able to supplement their incomes by growing durians. The rubber farmers have now begun picking durians from the trees as they begin to ripen. One durian plantation owner, Chaiyo Sisaeng, said his durian trees produced more durians this year. They will be harvested and ready for sale in the middle of this month. Chaiyo said the reason he started producing durian was because the weather in Bueng Kan was similar to the weather in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat where he had previously rented a plot of land to grow durian trees. After returning to his hometown in Bueng Kan, he decided to grow some on his land where there are now 125 durian trees. Forty of them have produced durians this year.
