Myanmar’s President U Win Myint arrives in Thailand today to meet with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to discuss cooperation between the two nations.
The Myanmar President and his wife will visit the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha before meeting with Gen Prayut at Government House where the two leaders will discuss bilateral cooperation.
It is also the first time that U Win Myint as president, has undertaken an official visit to a foreign country in a bilateral framework. His visit to Thailand marks the 70th anniversary of Thai-Myanmar diplomatic relations.
The Myanmar President will also attend the 8th Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Meeting, which will be held on June 15th and 16th in Bangkok, and a special banquet with other leaders of ACMECS nations.
The relationship between Thailand and Myanmar during the administration of Gen Prayut has been a smooth one. The government of Myanmar has always supported the Thai government and shown its understanding of the political situation.
Myanmar is also Thailand’s 6th largest trading partner in ASEAN with mutual trade topping 220 billion baht last year.
