Governor of Phuket province, Chamroen Tipayapongtada has called a meeting of relevant bodies on the management of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan and its centuries-old stupa.
Topics on the agenda today included the renovation of the stupa, the results of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys of the ancient construction, and activities to publicize the historical site and apply for UNESCO World Heritage status for it.
The GPR surveys show that the original stupa of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is aged around 1,100 years old and the outer stupa covering it is around 800 years old. The participants also discussed a plan to organize an international conference on the history of Nakhon Si Thammarat and its connection with the Indo-Pacific Peninsula.
Academic papers on historical aspects of Nakhon Si Thammarat and its ancient stupa are being published. The process is scheduled for completion by late June. Governor Chamroen also instructed relevant agencies to encourage all sectors to participate in the management of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan to promote visits to the southern province.
