The Prime Minister has reaffirmed that the general election will take place in February 2019 and that the Thai people will have complete power to decide the future of the country.
Ahead of the upcoming general election, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha noted that many new political parties have been established and registered with the Election Commission in accordance with the organic law on political parties. He said the law is not intended to limit the number of members of some parties to create advantages for certain others but is actually aimed at ensuring the legitimacy of all party members and the transparency of their personal financial transactions.
As the ban on political activities has yet to be lifted, the Prime Minister urged all activists to refrain from instigating chaos and spreading distorted facts on social media as such actions would bring about legal punishment.
As for the draft organic laws on the election of members of parliament and senators, Gen Prayut said the Constitutional Court has ruled that they are not in violation of the charter and the National Legislative Assembly is speeding up the deliberation process for both of them. He gave an assurance that the general election will be held in February next year as already announced and the results will represent the people’s true wishes.
