Police chief returns from Frankfurt without Phra Prommethi

A police delegation, led by national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, flew back to Bangkok from Frankfurt this afternoon but without any traces of Phra Prommethi, the former assistant abbot of Wat Samphanthawong, who reportedly fled to Germany after his escape from Bangkok on May 24.

The delegation flew to Frankfurt early this month, hoping that the runaway monk would be handed over to them by German authorities after he was held in custody at Frankfurt airport.

However, the senior monk who has already been defrocked has reportedly asked for asylum in Germany and this may cause a delay in his handover and possibly his extradition which will be a time-consuming process.

Informed source said the manifest of Thai Airways International’s flight TG923 bound for Bangkok from Frankfurt and due to arrive at Suvaranabhumi international airport at 12.30 pm Wednesday showed the names of Pol Gen Chakthip and his delegates but without the name of Phra Prommethi.

The source added that the national police chief and his delegates left the airport through Gate 10 and were whisked away in police vans.  A large group of reporters was at the airport since 9 am hoping in vain to talk to the police chief.

The source said that one of the delegates Pol Lt-Col Sutthipong Wongpin, the Immigration Bureau commissioner, was left behind in Frankfurt at the order of the police chief to coordinate with German authorities regarding the possible extradition of the senior monk.

ACMECS leaders to implement master plan for 5-year development cooperation

 The leaders of countries participating in the Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit, vowed to implement a five-year master plan for regional development, before the official opening ceremony this morning. DPM Prawit:Govt yet to set dates for political party meetings

The Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs has insisted it is not yet time for the government to set clear dates for meetings with political parties or to lift the ban on political activities.
