The Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Police has led an inspection of Khao Sarn Road in a continued effort against gambling during the World Cup.
Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakan, led officers to restaurants and entertainment venues in the Khao Sarn Road area, focusing particularly on places showing World Cup 2018 and are thus at risk of supporting betting on the matches. The action was to seek out gambling as well as to promote understanding among citizens and tourists of the illegality of betting in Thailand. He noted the activity was necessary as many tourists are from countries where gambling is legal and may not be aware of Thai laws.
Police apprehended close to 1,000 people over the first three days of the World Cup with over 100 of them being bookies. They have also detected a large number of betting websites which are in the process of being shut down. Authorities are to integrate their efforts to protect children and new gamblers from engaging in the vice.
