Prachuap Khiri Khan province is encouraging farmers to farm more MD2 pineapple in bid to contain the price fluctuations and in competition with Batavia pineapple.
Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Agriculture Official Wanchai Nilwong revealed the central province is encouraging more farmers to farm MD2 pineapples under the Siam Gold brand as they now have better market demands when comparing to the traditional farming of Pattawia pineapple feeding to processing plants.
The agricultural office has arranged pilot projects providing assistance and support to participating farmers from the preparation of the soil, the water system, the use of fertilizers, and quality control. The office has also been working with the provincial commercial office for the marketing of the produce.
MD2 pineapple is being sold at domestic shopping malls and markets on high demands. Export markets such as Japan and China were interested to buy Thai pineapples, but the current supply is still only suitable for domestic sales only.
MD2 pineapple is a favorite among customers due to its sweet and tangy taste. The fruit has four times more vitamin C than other varieties without being too acidic. The fruit can be stored for about 30 days, and is being sold for 30-40 baht each.
