Meechai: Selection of new EC chairman constitutional

Constitution Drafting Commission chairperson Meechai Ruchuphan has confirmed the constitutionality of this week’s selection of the new Election Commission chief.

Citing Paragraph 9, Section 12 of the Organic Election Commission Act, Meechai said the five newly-appointed commissioners were obligated to select a chairman among themselves without having to wait for the appointment of the other two EC candidates who will be recruited once the appointment of the first five members has been forwarded for royal endorsement.

He also dismissed a claim that the selection of the new EC chief that took place on Tuesday deprived the two future commissioners of their right to become chairman, pointing out that the naming of former Thai ambassador Itthiporn Boonprakong EC head, allows the electoral body to follow through with preparations for next year’s general election.

Meechai added that Itthiporn will have to perform his duties as EC chairman until the end of his term or his resignation, but while in office he cannot be replaced by other commissioners.

ACMECS leaders to implement master plan for 5-year development cooperation

The leaders of countries participating in the Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit, vowed to implement a five-year master plan for regional development, before the official opening ceremony this morning.
