Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee has resolved to maintain the policy interest rate at 1.5% a year to support Thailand's economic growth.
Secretary-General of the Monetary Policy Committee, Chaturong Chantharang, said the Thai economy is still growing, mainly due to the export sector as well as the relocation of some manufacturing sites to Thailand. Other positive factors for the Thai economy include expanding private consumption and investment.
However, the secretary-general warned that the tourism sector may grow less than forecast following the sinking of a tour boat in Phuket.
The average general inflation rate is close to the estimated rate and overall monetary conditions are still loose, said Mr. Chaturong. Furthermore, the baht currency is moving in line with other currencies in the region.
The continuous maintenance of the policy interest rate helps stimulate the purchasing power of the mid to upper income consumers, said the secretary-general.
